Henning Brockhaus

Born in Plettenberg, Germany, Henning Brockhaus studied there and later at Altena at the New language High School where he received his Degree (Abitur) in 1965. He than studied at the Northwest Music Academy in Detmold, Germany with focus on the Clarinet and successfully finished his studies in 1970 with a diploma in music. From 1970 till 1975 Mr. Brockhaus studies Philosophy, Theatre and Music Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. In 1975 he meets Giorgio Strehler and becomes his permanent assistant Director first in Hamburg (Der gute Mensch von Sezuan by Brecht) and then in Milan at the Piccolo Teatro until 1983. From 1984 till 1989 Mr. Brockhaus works as a dramaturgy and director at the Théatre de l’Europe, Théatre de l’Odéon in Paris (founded by Strehler).
Productions by Henning Brockhaus at the Théatre de l’Europe included: L’Histoire inachevée by Volker Braun; Jeux de femme by Zanussi (this production is invited by the Festival dei due mondi at Spoleto, Italy); Il tempo stringe and Il signor Pirandello è desiderato al telefono by Tabucchi.
1989 Brockhaus returns to the Piccolo Teatro di Milano. There he puts on productions of L’Affare by Bertazzoni and Störfall by Christa Wolf. At the same time Bockhaus works as a dramaturgy and assistant at the production of Faust Part I and II directed by Strehler. Within the context of the several years lasting projectProgetto Faust Henning Brockhaus directs several Plays, like Winterreise and Der Fall Oppenheimer by Kippardt.
1990 follows the production of Die Frau vom Meer by Ibsen. This production is invited to Rome by the Teatro Argentina and then after to the Festival di Macerata.

Verdi at the Wuppertaler Bühnen; Biedermann und die Brandstifter by Max Frisch in Antwerpen; Rigoletto and Lucia di Lammermoor at the Macerata Opera Festival (1993); Die Gute Mutter by Goldoni at the Schowbourg, Antwerpen; Die heimliche Ehe by Cimarosa at the Staatsoper, Berlin; La traviata at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (also produced in Nagoya, Japan); Macbeth at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (1996); Faust by Gounod in Tokyo in the same year; Andorra by Frisch at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken; Attila by Verdi at Macerata; Otello by Verdi at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna; Elektra at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma; Don Carlos by Schiller at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken; Parsifal at Utrecht and Amsterdam; Elektra at the Teatro Real di Madrid (1998); Madama Butterfly at Macerata (1999) and Tristan und Isolde at Den Haag; Lucia di Lammermoor at Tokyo;Tosca at the Sperimentale di Spoleto; Macbeth at Tokyo (1. Price by the Japan Music Critics Assosiation, 2000); Midea by Strasnoy at the Sperimentale di Spoleto and in 2000 at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma; Rigoletto at the Festival Verdiano di Parma (2001). During the same year Henning Brockhaus works on a five-piece theatre project about Cervantes, that constitutes itself from parts of Don Quixote and fiveIntermezzi. The production is performed at Reggio Emilia in the summer of 2001 and a year later the project is produced at the Teatro Stabile di Torino; La vera storiaby L. Berio at the Staatsoper Hamburg (2002); El Cimarrón by H.W. Henze at Macerata (this production claims the Abbiati Prize, 2003); a project about Rousseau and La serva padrona by Pergolesi and Le Devin du village by J.J. Rousseau for the 2004 Festival Pergolesi-Spontini; Turandot Teatro dell’Opera di Roma 2006 and 2007 at the NNTT of Tokyo; Jakob Lenz by W. Rihm at Macerata 2007; The Emperor Jones by L. Gruenberg at the Teatro delle Muse, Ancona, Italy; Il Prigionier Superboby Pergolesi, Pergolesi Festival Jesi 2009 and Traviata in Jesi and Ancona.
2010 and 2011: Traviata at Teatro San Carlo in Naples, in NCPA in Bejing, at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and at Palau des Arts in Valencia; new Production of Beatrice di Tenda in Catania.
His future engagements including: Traviata in Circuito Marchigiano, in Bejing and at Festival La Coruña.
