Maurizio Barbacini is one of today’s most sought-after conductors. In a distinguished career, Maestro Barbacini has appeared with many of the world’s great opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera New York, San Francisco Opera, Paris Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna Staatsoper and Geneva Opera. In addition, he has held positions as Principal Conductor of the Finnish National Opera, Principal Guest Conductor of the Stockholm Opera and Principal Conductor of the Opera Company of Philadelphia.
He has conducted productions for most of the leading opera houses in Europe and the US, including at the Paris Opera (Manon Lescaut, La bohème), Deutsche Oper Berlin (La traviata, Aida), Vienna State Opera (Tosca), Bavarian State Opera (Madama Butterfly, Don Pasquale, Un ballo in maschera), Metropolitan Opera New York (La traviata, L’elisir d’amore), San Francisco Opera (Tosca, L’elisir d’amore, Madama Butterfly) and Cincinnati Opera (Manon Lescaut, Falstaff).In January 2006, the Financial Times said of the Metropolitan Opera’s production of L’elisir d’amore:«Primary credit must be traced to the pit, where Maurizio Barbacini enforced lilt, momentum and rhythmic punch – without pressure, without affectation, and without egomania. Rapport with the stage seemed always sensitive, respect for the fragile yet graceful sentiment always affectionate».
Recent successes were La forza del destino in Bern and Tokyo, Il barbiere di Siviglia in San Francisco, Il Turco in Italia with the Bayerische Staatsoper, Madama Butterfly at Dresden Semperoper. the follow-up of his partnership with Nhk Tokyo - La bohème at New National Theatre, Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia at Frankfurt Opera, Rigoletto in Düsseldorf, La bohème and Aida in Basel, La traviata in St. Gall, Turandot in Philadelphia, Traviata and Don Pasquale in Berlin, Anna Bolena in Dortmund and in Düsseldorf, Trovatore in Trieste, Lucia di Lammermoor in Duisburg and in Frankfurt,Carmen in Tokyo.
Maurizio Barbacini has made a number of recordings, including two discs of opera arias with ahe Munich Radio Orchestra: Bel sogno with the soprano Cristina Gallardo-Domâs (Teldec) and Voce di donna with the mezzosoprano Denyce Graves (Rca Red Seal), Verdi’s Gustavo III - Gothenburg Opera Chorus & Orchestra (Dynamic); two Rossini’s operas in Dvd: Il barbiere di Siviglia with the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma (Hardy Classics) and La Gazzetta with the Orquesta Sinfonica del Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona for the direction of Dario Fo (Opus Arte). La Gazzetta has also been recorded in a live audio version in Pesaro, for the Rossini Opera Festival with the Orchestra Giovanile del Festival (Rof).
Upcoming engagements include Macbeth and La forza del destino in Sydney, Ernani in Sassari and Le Cheval de bronze (Auber) in Berlin.
